Darpana: Mirroring Traditions of Raga & Harmony

October 19, 2025
@ 4 pm ET
Rohan Krishnamurthy, Indian percussion
Boel Gidholm, violin
Naomi Gregory, harpsichord
Deborah Fox, lutes & theorbo

An innovative cross-cultural collaboration between two distinct classical music traditions — European medieval to baroque music, and classical Indian music. We’ll explore the connections and contrasts between these two musical worlds, their shared values of beauty and virtuosity, and the deep cultural histories they represent.

The program, happening the day before the Indian holiday of Diwali, will open with a Sanskrit prayer “Deepa Jyoti Parabrahma”, a salutation to the sacred lamp/lighting of the lamp for prayer, appropriate for Diwali. The program will be a mix of Indian raga, western baroque songs and instrumental music, and fun fusions of the two cultures. Western European works will include highly ornamented pieces by Luzzaschi, French songs by Lambert and Julie Pinel, and Monteverdi’s iconic Zefiro Torna. Some pieces will feature a unique musical interpretation of combining both styles of music, in a new interpretation of musical collaboration.
