Philip Anderson
Hailed for his “voice of liquid warmth and easy stage presence,” Philip Anderson is a much sought-after tenor among early music ensembles. He has been a guest artist with Chatham Baroque, Lionheart, Mark Morris Dance Group, The New York Collegium, New York State Baroque, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Piffaro, The Queen’s Chamber Band, and The Waverly Consort. He is a founding member of My Lord Chamberlain’s Consort, an ensemble that specializes in Elizabethan lute songs. He is also a member of Artek and The Tiffany Consort, which was nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award. For three seasons he toured the United States in the title role of The Play of Daniel with New York’s Ensemble for Early Music.
Recent engagements include a Carnegie Hall debut singing Handel’s Messiah with the Masterworks Chorus and Orchestra, Einstein on the Beach with the Philip Glass Ensemble (also in Carnegie Hall), the title role in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at Symphony Space in New York City, Scarlatti’s oratorio La Giuditta at Weil Recital Hall, and the role of Mozart in Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera Mozart and Salieri in Richmond. This spring he sings the Evangelist in Bach’s St. John Passion at Swarthmore College and Haydn’s Creation on Long Island. In Europe he has sung at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, at the Tage Alter Musik Festival in Regensburg, and in Scarlatti’s first opera Gli Equivoci nel Sembiante in Palermo.
Philip also enjoys singing musical theatre and cabaret songs. In the spring of 2007 he appeared on Broadway in Coram Boy. He is member of a revue entitled Rendezvous which played at Feinstein’s and the Metropolitan Room in Manhattan and was nominated for a 2008 ‘MAC’ award. As the cantor at the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola on Park Avenue in New York City, he leads the singing in most of the services there and has appeared on the acclaimed series Sacred Music in a Sacred Space. His recordings include John Dowland’s First Book of Songs with My Lord Chamberlain’s Consort, I Don’t Want to Love; Madrigals of Monteverdi with Artek, Jane’s Hand, The Jane Austen Songbooks with Julianne Baird, La Giuditta with The Queen’s Chamber Band, and O Magnum Mysterium with the Tiffany Consort. Philip holds degrees from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Manhattan School of Music, and Queen’s College. When not singing he can usually be found in North Salem, NY where he grows vegetables and raises chickens.
